Presentation to Bodriggy School Artist Alannah Egan
On the 26th of October, Marjorie Roberts, Chair of Hayle in Bloom, presented a certificate to Alannah Egan of Bodriggy Primary School in recognition of being selected as our entry in the 7-11 year-old category.
Adopt-a-Plot volunteers, Mary Coad and Lyn Pollack, tidy up before the winter sets in. Dick Horwell and Head Gardener, Mike Webb, lend a hand.
Hayle in Bloom Celebrates
Many members of the Hayle in Bloom team met on the 1st of October to welcome Marjorie Roberts back from her trip to Coventry and to celebrate the wonderful achievements of the year.
Naturally, cake is a vital ingredient of any celebration and Margaret Tanner brought just the right thing.
Britain in Bloom, 2007
26 September 2007
At the award ceremony in Coventry Cathedral, Hayle was awarded Silver Gilt in the Urban Category of Britain in Bloom. The award categories are Bronze, Silver, Silver-Gilt and Gold. Getting Silver-Gilt in our first attempt at the national competition is a marvellous achievement. The winner in our category was Uddingston in Scotland - congratulations to them.
Hayle in Bloom's Chair, Marjorie Roberts, Secretary, Margaret Tanner, and Deputy Mayor, John Coombe, accept the certificate presented by Susan Hampshire.
Shredded Wheat Community Champions
There was another well-deserved award made for:
Individuals who have dedicated so much of their time to the Britain in Bloom cause.
Congratulations to the person in Hayle we all would have chosen:
Marjorie Roberts
Well done Marjorie and thanks for all of your years of hard work.
Marjorie Roberts receives her award from actress Susan Hampshire.
Thirty-three members of Hayle in Bloom attended the awards ceremony which, for the very first time, was held at the Tregenna Castle Hotel at St. Ives. The weather was damp and dismal; such a shame for the 350 people who attended from many towns in Cornwall and up to Bristol and beyond.
After a 'Cornish-style' buffet lunch the presentations began.
Here are the cups waiting to be awarded
Our first good news was a Neighbourhood Award, Certificate of Merit for the Millpool Gardens. Congratulations to Georgina Schofield and her team and to the PDC gardeners.
And the big news was that we have taken the GOLD in South West Tourist Association Cup category for the second year running. We did not snag the cup this year - that went to Sherbourne. Having visited Sherbourne recently I can confirm that they put on a beautiful show and are deserving winners. But - we can beat them next year!
Our judge, Roger Burnett, said "Hayle is a very accomplished and well-organised entry with strong community involvement. We were very impressed with the high standard of floral displays in the public areas, especially Penpol Gardens."
Watch the welcome by PDC Chair Joan Tanner and the announcement of the award.
RHS Photoshoot in Hayle
Hayle is one of 10 nation-wide locations selected to be photographed for RHS publicity for the Britain in Bloom competition - and, we hope, to appear in the the RHS magazine The Garden. Hayle in Bloom volunteers, gardeners and supporters turned out in force to provide 'photo-fodder'.
We now have the design for the Wildlife Garden to be placed at the Hayle Library as part of the Big Lottery Fund's 'Breathing Spaces' initiative. Click here for more details.
Britain in Bloom Judging
For the Britain in Bloom judging, Hayle's first attempt at the national competition, it was again a beautiful day and the gardens were looking marvellous. In summing up after touring the gardens, judge Roger Burnett said that the competition was all about 'community' and he had seen a lot of friendliness and community spirit in Hayle. Without giving anything away, he praised all the hard work done in partnership among the professional gardeners, businesses and volunteers - just what the Royal Horticultural Society hoped to promote.

The weather was excellent, the flowers were looking lovely and we received some positive feedback from the judges. Paradise Park provided a fine display in their own gardens and a delicious lunch. All we can do now is to wait for the results.
