WELCOME

The official sign is installed at the library announcing the garden and honouring our late chair Marjorie Roberts.

Next meeting: 29 September 2008 at the Rugby Club.  We take a break in August.

The countdown clock showed '0' as judges Ruth Miles and Martin Ford came to look at our entry in the South West in Bloom competition. The weather was fine and Paradise Park provided a pleasant end to the 2-1/2 hours of meeting, inspecting and interviewing. (Click the picture for a larger version)

In the front row are: Mayor John Coombe, Ruth Miles, Martin Ford, Hayle in Bloom Chair Margaret Tanner, Mayoress Lorna Coombe, Deputy Mayor John Bennett and Paradise Park Director Nick Reynolds.

Ruth Miles and Martin Ford meet the disabled volunteers from Heather Lane Nursery.

The 2008 South West in Bloom Judging Date is

The town is looking lovely.  Let's hope the weather cooperates!

Our gardeners have produced the new town logo in flowers.  It should turn blue as the plants mature.

Butterfly and Wildlife Garden Comes to Life
On the 20th of May, children from Penpol School,  Bodriggy Primary School and Gwinear Community Primary School turned out to help Hayle in Bloom members and Penwith gardeners plant the Butterfly Garden.  Hayle's Mayor and Penwith's Chair turned out for an 'official planting' and the media recorded the event for the local newspapers.  See more pictures here.

New Hayle in Bloom Committee

Margaret Tanner, Chair for 2008

At the monthly meeting on May 5th, after observing a minute's silence for the much-missed Marjorie Roberts, Margaret Tanner was elected Chair, Dick Horwell deputy Chair, Sarah Turk, secretary and Pam Northover, treasurer.  Congratulations to the new committee.

Marjorie Roberts, 1936-2008

Hayle in Bloom reports with sadness the loss of Marjorie Roberts, who has been our Chair since 2004 and who has guided us to awards in both the regional and national Britain in Bloom competitions. She died the morning of 21st April 2008 following several years of fragile health.

Born in Hayle, Marjorie lived here her entire life except for a seven-year period in Yorkshire. Earlier in her life she worked as a visiting nurse and in a variety of administrative jobs.

Always one to get involved and get things done, Marjorie was a Hayle Town Council member from 1995 to 2007 and spent two years as deputy mayor followed by two years as town mayor (2003-5), a position she thoroughly enjoyed and which brought credit to the council.

In addition to the awards given to Hayle in Bloom, Marjorie took a personal award in the Shredded Wheat Community Champions category, one of only six individuals to be recognised throughout the country for having dedicated an extraordinary amount of personal time to the Britain in Bloom cause.

In April Marjorie was honoured by the Hayle Town Council as a Citizen of the Year. In her acceptance speech she asked that this not be just a titular honour, but that she be allowed to take an active role in promoting and supporting the town.

Our condolences go out to husband Arthur and their two children. Marjorie was much loved by all who knew her and she will be sadly missed.

New Logo Adopted
At the February 2008 meeting, the Hayle in Bloom Committee adopted the logo submitted by gardener Mike Kemp's wife.  Congratulations to Ingrid for her fine art work.

From the Cornishman, 28 February 2008

Hayle in Bloom members are gearing up to win the South West in Bloom cup this year and welcomed a new member to the committee.

Town councillor Richard Horwell was elected vice chairman at Monday's annual meeting, where it was announced that work on the library's wildlife and butterfly garden would be completed in May.

The group received more than £7,000 grant funding for the project from the Lottery's Breathing Places programme.
