CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE

October 2008
Margaret Tanner

We were full of anticipation (and nerves) when we got in the coach early in the morning of the 18th of September.  We knew we had tried as hard as we could and hoped that the hard work of the volunteers and professionals would be recognised.

We were delighted when we heard that we had managed to retain our Gold status and then absolutely amazed to be awarded the SWTA cup.

I am so proud of our team and this award encourages to keep striving to keep Hayle a beautiful place and a joy to live and work in.

Our monthly meetings on the last Monday of every month now resume and we look forward to welcoming new faces as well as the regulars. We must start planning straight away for new projects and I would be pleased to hear your suggestions.

Let's try again for the cup!

Although it is a big responsibility to take on the Chair of Hayle in Bloom just weeks before the annual judging in the South West in Bloom competition, I feel confident that I have a strong team of helpers to support me in getting everything ready.

Filling Marjorie's shoes will be extremely difficult, but I know that we will all try extra hard to be able to honour her memory.

We have plenty of projects under way and our public and private gardens have been looking lovely since February.

We have an abundance of ideas, lots of volunteers, a team of excellent gardeners, strong support from our town and district councils and our schools, and a friendly town with an interesting history that we can help make more beautiful and even more enjoyable to live in.

I am looking forward to the year ahead and, I hope, to meeting lots of new volunteers to make Hayle Bloom!

We are now Gold Award winners in the South West in Bloom competition for the second year in a row.  Well done!

Members of Hayle in Bloom have been enjoying a well-deserved rest since the end of July - apart from our 'Adopt-a-Plotters' who are still diligently weeding the various flower beds etc around Hayle!

I would like to say a very big thank you to all of them and hope that they know that their dedication, and that of all of our volunteers and gardeners, is very much appreciated.

I mentioned that we have been enjoying a rest, but in fact we have had our busy times. On 18 July (the same day as our Regional Judging) I was invited in the evening by Connor Downs Gardening Club to give a talk about Hayle in Bloom. This was a new experience for me and although he had had a very long and busy day, Brian Hosken from Penwith District Council came along with me and was such a support. We had a lovely evening with a great bunch of happy gardening people.

Another great event in our calendar was was the photoshoot of Hayle by the Royal Horticultural Society on 28 July. Hayle was one of 10 Towns in the country to be selected by the RHS for some photographs in their new brochure and advertising and I am so proud that Hayle really is being recognised. It was a great experience for all those Members of Hayle in Bloom who came along at very short notice.

The Library Project of a reading and butterfly garden commenced on 19 September and we are grateful to George Brighton, Jewsons and Chris Lello for their sponsorship of help.

On Thursday, 26 September I shall be in Coventry Cathedral along with Brian Hosken from PDC, Margaret Tanner (our Secretary), John & Lorna Coombe (Hayle Deputy Mayor and Mayoress) and Joan Tanner PDC Chairman to see how Hayle and St.Ives fared in the Britain in Bloom Awards. Believe you me, we shall all have everything crossed for that!  I would add that we are going at our own expense.

Our next meeting is on Monday, 01 October commencing at 7.30pm in Hayle Rugby Club. If you are interested, please come along, you will be made very welcome. We are a great bunch of individuals and love doing what we do.

February 2007

Hayle in Bloom has reached a very exciting stage and this year will see us entering the Town and National Competitions of Britain in Bloom.  We therefore have to be prepared for two sets of judging and, for the National Competition, we could also have an unannounced judging!. This is all very challenging, but we are ready for it - with a little help from our friends.

The theme for 2007 is "Bloomin' Wild" and the judges will be looking for particular instances of planting for wildlife and anything unique or really effective.  We are really fortunate in that we already fit into this category because of our partnership with Hayle Library to set up a Community Wildlife and Reading Garden on a piece of land behind the library.  This garden will be designed to attract butterflies and the project is being undertaken in conjunction with the BBC's Breathing Places project.

For our entry into the National Competition, in the Floral Display section the judges will be looking at:

  • Public parks and town gardens
  • Shops, retail centres and bus and train stations
  • Residential front gardens
  • Community involvement, schools, etc.
  • Recycling sites and car parks
  • Sustainable development, management of natural areas and waste management
  • Cleanliness of towns, treatment of weeds and the condition of street furniture

The judges will also be checking our marketing, publicity and promotion to ensure there is a high public awareness of the Britain in Bloom competition.  And we have to be innovative in attracting sponsorship and in raising funds.

We have quite a task in front of us but we will rise to the occasion. We are a happy committee with very hard-working volunteers and we are always grateful for all the help we receive from people in the town.

It is true to say that we rely on the shops and other establishments to have tubs and hanging baskets but, at the end of the day, we are all working together to make our town a lovely place for visitors to see and admire, and not just pass through, and for us to be proud of.

As in past years, we are always very appreciative of your support.
